ThermaLoft
Hammock

The ThermaLoft Hammock bridges the gap between casual summer camping and extreme cold weather hammocking. It features integrated 700 fill power down insulation that removes the need for added pads or blankets. The ThermaLoft is built in layers, preventing insulation from bunching which creates cold spots and discomfort for the user.

Understanding the Problem

Problem Statement

The hammock market is split between basic non-insulated models that become uncomfortably cold in moderate temperatures and high-performance insulated systems that are expensive and often overbuilt for casual use. As a result, recreational campers lack an affordable, streamlined option for comfortable, moderate weather hammocking.

Design Question

How might we create a hammock that keeps users comfortable in moderate temperatures, is easy to use, and cost-effective?

Competitive Analysis

4Season Survivorman Zip XL

4Season Survivorman Zip XL

$288

  • Removable Compressed Foam Pad
  • Double Layer Construction

The compressed foam pad adds the hassle of carrying an extra item and increasing set up time because of the need to insert and position the pad. A pad also changes the user experience by adding a stiff layer to the hammock. The price point of almost $300 removes this hammock from the intended customer segment.

Superior Voyager Hammock Orange

Superior Voyager Hammock Orange

$220

  • Integrated Down Insulation Tubes
  • Rainfly
  • Bug-net

The Superior Hammock line is a true winter hammock. It has integrated down insulation. It also has a bug net, a rain fly, and several pockets and pouches for holding items. While a good product. Its numerous features remove it from the desired customer segment.

Ember UnderQuilt

Ember™ UnderQuilt

$120

  • Can be Attached to Most Hammocks

An underquilt is an insulated blanket that hangs beneath the hammock to block cold air from below — the primary source of heat loss in hammock camping. The Ember is a standalone accessory that must be purchased separately, takes up additional pack space, and is not compatible with all hammock models.

The market is open to a budget hammock with integrated insulation.

Materials & Construction

Materials

20d Ripstop Nylon

Because of the three wall design of the hammock, a lighter denier nylon can be used to decrease weight and maintain strength. Around 12-15 yards will be needed.

700 Fill Power Down Insulation

Saves on manufacturing costs from a higher fill power down while still being lightweight and compact. Around 15-18 ounces will be needed.

Polyester Webbing

Used for the straps. Around 3 feet will be needed.

Bent Gate Aluminum Carabiners

Aluminum carabiners provide a lightweight alternative to steel while maintaining ample strength. The bent-gate design enhances usability, allowing users to clip hammock straps quickly and easily.

Construction

Hammock construction diagram

The ThermaLoft features a floating sleep layer, which is a separate top layer of fabric that is only attached at the ends and along the edges. This design provides a smooth surface for the user to lie on and prevents discomfort from laying on the quilt stitching and insulation baffles.
